You know that feeling when a word is on the tip of your tongue, you know the definition of the word, but you just can't think of the word itself? Or you have a couple of concepts in mind and just can't come up with the right word?

This happened to me today when having to translate the French word "frilosité", in the context of an event. Coldness came to mind...

I then happened upon the OneLook reverse dictionary - a great resource for just this type of problem. Hunting around a bit more, I then came across another reverse dictionary, not as good, but valuable for pinning down an elusive word.

I'm still toying with "frilosité", and letting the adjectival concepts of "uninteresting", "unfriendly" and "restrained" float around in my head. I'm sure something will come to me. Suggestions in a comment please...!

Le seul cours dont je me rappelle de mes 4 années de fac et qui me sert toujours aujourd'hui, est la "stylistique comparative". Nous avions un professeur drôle et intéressant qui nous révelait les specificités des deux langues français et anglais. Ainsi, nous avons appris que le français préfère les substantifs, alors que l'anglais préfère, de loin, les verbes. J'ai déjà parlé de cette différence ici.

Autre phenomène, qui témoigne du penchant français pour la pensée abstraite, est le besoin de compliquer les choses... Là, je porte un jugement de valeur - non, le besoin, disons, d'habiller des concepts simples avec des mots... comment dire... plus scientifiques.

Un exemple m'a frappé l'autre jour, dans une traduction technique pour un véhicule :

"faire fonctionner l'avertisseur sonore"

La traduction qui m'est tout de suite venue à l'esprit était cette manifique mis-translation, bien connue dans les cercles de traducteurs - "tootle him with vigor"...

J'ai finalement opter pour la traduction plus sérieuse "sound the horn"...

Pas étonnant que le taux de foisonnement du français vers l'anglais est de 80% !

Par pur hasard, je suis tombée hier sur leur dictionnaire en-ligne... un vrai bijou, en 6 langues (EN, FR, DE, Ar, SP, IT), avec un niveau de technicité très satisfaisant.

It has been a long time and I do apologise, but as you might have seen from the "sister" blog, there has been a lot going on.

Now that things are set up and the right people are around me to help, I can get back to my main passion - translating. There has been no shortage this month. So much so that I delete all the ProZ jobs in my Inbox without even looking.

This morning though, one caught my eye and I just had to share it with you. "Interpreter required" it said. Location of the company: India.

When I opened the job it said:

"We are in search of an full time interpreter (French to English) to work in Cedex in France for two months."

Well! I've never been to Cedex, but I guess it must be somewhere near Toutes Directions...

Pourquoi tout cet effort ? Eh bien, quand on vous demande des références, spécialisations ou simplement pour faire un CV sérieux, c'est très utile.

Constant learning

When you define yourself as a "technical translator", it is like saying you are a "medical professional". There is a world of difference between a brain surgeon and a veterinary nurse. Alright, so the consequences in translation are not as serious - or are they?

Technical can mean anything from the geological makeup of a rock deposit in the Sahara to the manufacturing process of an organic pig feed. No one can possible "know" such a vast range of topics. I have already mentioned how a translator becomes specialised over the years, but even within a wide specialisation, how is it possible to determine rapidly if a document is "up your street" or not?

This week (and last), I have been learning about crude oil processing, distillation, cut-points and fractionation indices. Whew! I had never seen the word "fractionation" before. I had no idea crude oil could be "cracked" or that it contained such a thing as "aromatics". This is all terminology - easily findable on the web, fairly easy to grasp with the help of Wikipedia and other sources. In fact, the underlying language is computers and mathematics, two areas I am familiar and comfortable with.

Take this sentence for example:

N1 représente la pente rouge (ln(bi/di)<0) et N2 représente la pente bleue(ln(bi/di)>0). Plus la pente est forte, plus l’indice est élevé et meilleure est le fractionnement.

It's not as complicated as it seems. And the graph helps enormously.

Moral of the story: examine the underlying language of a text. Don't be put off by a client that tells you the text concerns crude oil processing.

Now, I am not going to add crude oil processing to my list of specialities, but it rather fits in nicely with the generic "energy", under the more generic "environment" speciality. All I have to do now is find a conversation in which to drop my new-found fractionation knowledge...!

The International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM) has an online dictionary that is just wonderful. In fact, it is more somewhere between a dictionary and an encyclopedia (neologism needed here?).

The table of contents can be found here. I have just spent a happy hour browing through the definitions. Organized into two columns, French on the left and English on the right, here's an example:
