After machine translation comes....
100 million people translating (web content) for free?
Watch here. This is astounding.
This is what you get with machine translation!
As a translator and language teacher, I don't know what to think...

Email Scams

I received this email this morning:
Hello, Your translation service is needed for a text worth 22,000 words.
I would like you to confirm your availability for this project.
Kind regards,
Aikman FARKUS.
It's a scam, as a Google search on the name comes up with a very interesting forum on Proz.
In general, when you receive a request like this, your suspicions should be immediately aroused:
- The email address is hotmail, gmail, yahoo or some other service any Tom, Dick or Harry can sign up to.
- The email address does not "correspond" to the signed name (here draliufaruk@gmail.com)
- The English appears bizarre ("a text worth 22,000 words"??)
- There is no company name.
A couple of wonderful English aphorisms spring to mind:
If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it is a duck.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
I am also tempted to reply "pull the other one", but there is only one course of action:
DELETE!

Wordfast / Portable PC conflict
There is a conflict that exists on some portable PCs with Wordfast - namely when you use the key combination CTRL + ALT + → to select a highlighted word in the glossary, the screen turns sideways!!
This can be interesting as a practical joke (CTRL + ALT + ↑ to correct), but a royal pain in the neck (!) when using Wordfast.
Finally, I had enough and spent half an hour looking for the solution. I am delighted to share it here with you! Et je vais le poster également en français pour ceux qui ont rencontré le problème de l'écran qui tourne subitement à 90°...
1. Right click on your desktop - Clique droite sur le bureau
2. Graphics options - Options graphiques
3. Hotkeys --> Deactivate - Touches d'accès rapide --> désactiver
Voilà. It's as simple as that.
When you know how!

The Intercultural Interpreter
I stumbled upon this interesting article:
http://www.immi.se/jicc/index.php/jicc/article/view/135/103
and thought how things have come full circle! As part of our English language training courses, we offer intercultural training, and the experience I have had in some interpreting situations always comes in handy.
